After recovering from injury, the two-times Grand Slam champion Simona Halep returned in the US Open second round on Monday. The hard-court duel began in front of the audience.

The 29-year-old Romanian, No. 12 seed, defeated Italy's Camila Giorgi 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), and is scheduled to face Slovakian lucky loser Kristina Kucova in the second round. Who throws out  American Ann Li 7-5, 6-1.

The 2018 French Open and 2019 Wimbledon champion Halep suffered a torn left calf muscle at the Italian Open and missed the French Open and Wimbledon. He subsequently injured his right thigh in Cincinnati, but New York started solidly.

Halep fired six aces, and won 83% of her first-serve points, hit 14 winning goals in 16 unforced errors, and took advantage of Giorgi's 31 unforced errors.

The final Grand Slam tournament of the season will play with fans.

Last year, the event took place without an audience because of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this year grandstands are allowed to be filled to 100% capacity.

The last Grand Slam tournament of the year has been deprived of some big names in the sport. Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, and Serena Williams were injured, but after an empty match a year ago, it is still expected to be a major draw as Novak Djokovic offers to complete the scheduled year Grand Slam.

On Monday, the Australian Open second best Jennifer Brady, Jelena Ostapenko and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also pulled out from the US Open Tennis 2021 because of injury.
